ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, today released StevePearceHatesTheLobos.com, a new online campaign featuring evidence of Pearce's efforts to curb measures that would protect the Mexican wolf and other endangered species. "During his five years in Congress, Steve Pearce has voted consistently against the environment," LCV President Gene Karpinski said. "Of the 80 key votes since he has been elected, Pearce has voted against protecting wildlife, against clean air, against clean energy and against preserving our natural heritage in all but one vote." Pearce's abysmal record has earned him an embarassing lifetime LCV score of 1% and a spot on the 2008 Dirty Dozen. Pearce may hate lobos and their environment, but the campaign launched where lobos are loved the most - The University of New Mexico, which adpoted Lobos as its official mascot in 1920 because the animal is "respected for his cunning, feared for his prowess, and is the leader of the pack." LCV staff attended UNM's first football game of the season and gave away cards featuring Pearce's record and the Lobos' 2008 football schedule complete with important dates such as voter registration deadlines and election day. In addition to working to eliminate funding for lobo safety and being in favor of destroying the lobos' natural habitat, Pearce has been a constant supporter of drilling in Otero Mesa, the vast desert grasslands of southern New Mexico. The largest single contributor to Pearce's finances, Yates Petroleum, is the largest lease-holder in the Otero Mesa. |
